There are many different options for the future of The King’s Theatre. The priority of this campaign is to save the theatre. Roughly speaking, the options are:
- Immediate spending to address the health and safety issues in the building to make it safe. The theatre say this must be done within two years.
- Upgrading and refurbishment: a variety of options from simple upgrading to “bells and whistles” rebuilding of the interior. More details of the proposals, likely costs and sources of grant funding can be found in Council papers.
- Making the theatre more widely used: at the moment, the theatre is just used for 24 weeks a year (and shows are frequently sold out). There is a strong business case for putting on more shows, and also for developing a training facility. If we are serious about giving young people skills, the theatre should be used in conjuction with schools, colleges and universities to train young people in the skills needed for event management, lighting, rigging, stage design and construction and other skills that Edinburgh cries out for during the festivals
Maybe you have an idea of how it can be used. If so, please leave a comment below. There is no monopoly on good ideas.

I am an actor and singer and run an acting training company with all courses eligible for ILA funding (Raw Talent Productions Ltd). My long term goal is to create ‘The Actors Centre Scotland’ – the Kings would be an ideal venue…
Would love to see this get off the ground and am starting to link with schools, universities etc to get this moving. I am also the secretary of the new East of Scotland Equity branch so from a professional point of view this would be a great use of the Kings…
I look forward to hearing from interested parties – I hear back from a funding meeting in the next week or so…
